SCS Updates

Campus access for research: Access to campus for research purposes is very limited.  No research is to be performed on campus.  Access is restricted to individuals on a list maintained by OVPR and with a need for BRIEF access for activities that either maintain living organisms/perishable samples or maintain or service systems that enable the ability to do research remotely (e.g., re-booting servers or computers for remote access).  Your department research liaison has the list for your department and is the initial point of request for additions/changes.

  • All attendees will be put into a waiting room upon entry.
  • Martial will grant access to the next person in the queue when his previous meeting has finished.
  • To allow Martial to engage with as many people as possible, please try to limit your meeting time to fifteen minutes or less. 
  • If you would like to join as a group, please coordinate with your group so that you are logged into the waiting room at the same time. When the first person in the group is admitted, they can let Martial know the names of the other people in the group who should be admitted.
  • If you are in the queue but aren't granted access before 1:00pm, please let Nichole Merritt know if you would like to set up a brief 1:1, or you can send Martial email directly.

SCS Receiving will be scheduling limited pickup/dropoff times once a week with our vendors (USPS, UPS, FedEx, campus mail).  Staff will only be on campus briefly once per week.  For smaller items, we recommend shipping directly to your remote work location.  To arrange for shipping/receiving larger computing items, please contact receiving@cs.cmu.edu

SCS Building Facilities
 will have staff on campus briefly a few times per week to canvass our buildings.  Service requests should be sent to building@cs.cmu.edu.

Machine room operations
:  Our machines rooms will continue to be monitored 24 hours a day.  Some of this monitoring will be done remotely.  Computer operators will be on site each day for significantly shortened shifts.  There will be brief periods each day where there will be no staffing on site.  This team will be reachable 24 hours a day (x8-2068).

Help desk
:  Our Help team will be working entirely remotely, and reachable by phone (x8-4231) or email (help@cs.cmu.edu) M-F 9am-5pm.  It will be possible to get hardware support if needed, and machine drop-off pickup for this purpose can be arranged (with some lead time necessary) by contacting help@cs.cmu.edu.  The teams to which Help sometimes escalate incidents/requests will be using an "on call" system to make sure full support is available to our community.

Effective immediately, the number of staff on-site at the help desk has been reduced. In order to maintain social distancing, in-person support at the help desk will be by appointment only. You can schedule appointment via email to help@cs.cmu.edu or by calling 412-268-4231. Help Desk staff will continue to provide remote support and take calls during normal hours from off-campus. We have updated our Help Desk's tools to enhance their ability to help people as they work remotely.

 

March 16, 2020

  • SCS Receiving will maintain staffing in WeH 3613 during normal business hours;
  • SCS Computing Facilities will maintain 24-hour staffing in the machine rooms;
  • the SCS Help Desk will remain open under normal hours until further notice.
  • The entrances to GHC, NSH, EDSH, and 407SCRG will be locked down to CMU ID card holders only;
  • Within those buildings, departmental spaces will be locked down to level of access typically seen on weekends.

 

March 12, 2020

SCS Building Facilities will begin to decrease the amount of seating in common spaces including conference rooms and collaborative areas. Of note, the following rooms have been adjusted to seating for 25 people to aid social distancing.

March 11, 2020 

Update from President Jahanian

  • Classes will be canceled on March 16-17 to allow faculty, staff, and TAs time to finalize their preparations;
  • Alternative (remote) teaching methods will begin on March 18 and will continue until further notice;
  • All university-related domestic travel is restricted until further notice;
  • Recommendation to cancel or postpone all CMU events, whether on- or off-campus, that involve 25 people or more, and refrain from planning future gatherings until further notice.
