CMU Announces Restricted Campus Posture Following Pennsylvania’s New Mitigation Orders

Dear Members of the Carnegie Mellon Community,

As COVID-19 cases continue to rise, the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania announced additional, temporary COVID-19 protective mitigation measures yesterday. The new, limited-time mitigation orders (PDF) take effect at 12:01 a.m. Saturday, December 12 through Monday, January 4, 2021.

As has been the case throughout the pandemic, CMU has always been prepared to quickly change to a more restrictive posture should the situation warrant. In response to this order and the worsening conditions, effective immediately, we have changed our campus posture from modified to restricted services. The most immediate impact of this change will be the closing of our indoor fitness facilities and moving all dining services to carry-out. Please note that although we are changing our campus posture, we were already in remote instruction mode for the remainder of this semester. This restricted posture will remain in effect until at least January 5, 2021.

Despite our change to a restricted posture, we remain committed to providing access and opportunities to take care of your physical well-being and mental health.

To learn the best way to access services and resources throughout the winter break, please continue to check relevant websites.

Over this upcoming winter break, I encourage each of you to stick to the proven COVID-19 mitigation strategies. Stay at home and avoid all unnecessary contact with people outside your immediate household. While we are starting to see light at the end of the long pandemic tunnel, these next few months will be critical. We must all continue to do our part to protect those most vulnerable around us.

Sincerely,

Daryl Weinert
Chief of Staff and Vice President for Strategic Initiatives
COVID-19 Coordinator
